Zombie Drugs has been a new wave of drugs hitting the streets for the last few years. These drugs are not your classic heroin or cocaine. They are in a class of their own and are seriously dangerous. These new drugs are made to copy the effect of controlled substances, but these drugs are quite different.

They are man-made synthetic drugs made just to make money. These drugs have been quickly flooding the streets. As law enforcement tries to address this problem the manufacturers just change the packaging and an ingredient or two and put these drugs right back out.+

What are Bath Salts?

Synthetic cathinones are what are commonly known as bath salts. They are a part of a group of drugs known as “new psychoactive substances” (NPS). According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), NPS are unregulated psychoactive mind-altering substances with no legitimate medical use and are made to copy the effects of controlled substances. When bath salts hit the American market sales went through the roof. They are highly addictive. They went undetected in drug tests, but the effects of this drug were felt far and wide. They can be snorted, swallowed, injected, or smoked. People on Bath Salts have been linked to some very serious and shocking crimes.

What is Flakka?

Basically, Flakka was supposed to copy Bath Salts, however its effects are worse. It is made of a synthetic stimulant called. Alpha- PVP Compared to Bath Salts, Flakka is more potent and much more addictive. Flakka can be snorted, swallowed, smoked, or injected. They come in the form of clear or pink crystals. With Flakka, there has been a spike in rather crazy arrests. One man in Florida, impaled himself while trying to scale the fence into the police station. Yes, he was trying to get into the station. These synthetic drugs are definitely something to worry about. Most of these synthetic drugs leave the user looking like ‘The Walking Dead’. Bath Salts and Flakka have an important side effect in common- violence. These drugs make people act out in ways that are unprecedented. Users can hurt themselves, their family members, friends, or law enforcement.

What are Synthetic Cannabinoids?

These are on the market as ‘K2’ or ‘Spice’. They were being sold on almost every corner as herbal incense in convenience stores and tobacco shops. Again, these went undetected in drug tests when they first came out. That means people on probation, parole, or seeking employment were turning to these synthetic drugs with no knowledge of the side effects. These packages were labeled ‘not for human consumption’. These synthetic cannabinoids were being made in laboratories around the world with no standard for what ingredients were being used and how much. K2 and Spice are linked to psychotic episodes, difficulty breathing, even mental health issues.

Why are these drugs so dangerous?

These drugs are being made with no standards to follow- only laws to evade. They target the poor and homeless because they are so cheap and available. They also target people trying to get around drug tests. They are trying to get anyone to take these drugs. That is why these drugs flooded the market like they did. The US Government bans the sale of these types of synthetic drugs.

However, to get around these new laws, the manufacturers regularly alter the drug’s formula. With the constant changes to the formula and having no consistent way of being made, users have no idea what exactly they are ingesting. With each package you have no way of knowing what dose you are taking or what some of the effects will be. In 2011, the most recent year for which national figures are available, synthetics, which used to be called “designer drugs,” were a factor in more than 23,000 emergency room visits. The drugs are also the cause of increasing numbers of fatalities.

These drugs cause all the same symptoms of any addiction, but there is so much unknown about what these drugs consist of, what they can do, and how they will affect the brain and body long term.
