What Are Roxies? – “Roxies” is the slang name for the prescription opioid Roxicodone, which contains oxycodone. Physicians commonly prescribe Roxicodone for the treatment of moderate to severe pain, sudden breakthrough pain, or before surgery. Similar to other opioids, Roxicodone has the potential for addiction when used for an extended period.

Over time, the use or misuse of Roxies can cause tolerance to develop. Tolerance is a condition that is the result of the body’s capacity to diminish the effects of certain substances after repeated exposure. This effect can drive many people to increase the amount or frequency of their dosage due to the reduced response.

Dependence, which is another consequence of addiction, is a condition that occurs as the body and brain become accustomed to the presence of a substance. If the individual then tries to stop using, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms will manifest as a result.

Symptoms Associated with Roxicodone

Several symptoms can onset in association with the misuse of prescription opioids. If you witness these symptoms in yourself or a loved one who is using Roxies, addiction may have developed:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Lethargy
  • Constipation
  • Lack of motivation
  • Profound sedation and stupor
  • Slowed or labored breathing

If you recognize these symptoms and suspect that you or someone you know may be addicted to Roxicodone, professional help should be sought as soon as possible.

Roxicodone Addiction

In addition to physical cues, addiction results in behavioral changes becoming increasingly pronounced. Opioid addicts often engage in “doctor shopping,” or the practice of visiting several doctors or pharmacies in an attempt to garner new prescriptions. Persons experiencing addiction may also deceive their doctors regarding symptoms that would benefit from pain treatment or exaggerate the extent of existing illnesses.

These persons may also ask family members or friends for access to unused medication, or manipulate others into lying to doctors to obtain prescriptions for their own personal use. If these efforts are unsuccessful, addicts may resort to purchasing drugs from dealers, off of the Internet, or theft.

Oxycodone addiction can have devastating consequences on a person’s physical and psycho-emotional well-being. When used precisely as prescribed, side effects associated with this medication may include sweating, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, and more.

Roxicodone Overdose

When misused or combined with other prescription or illicit drugs or alcohol, Roxicodone can lead to profound central nervous system (CNS) depression and overdose. This condition is characterized by issues with breathing and severe drowsiness. Concurrent use of other CNS depressants, such as benzodiazepines or alchohol, can be particularly dangerous because their effects augment those of Roxicodone.

The following are hallmark signs of an overdose, which, in many cases, can be life-threatening:

  • Vomiting
  • Limp extremities
  • Cold or clammy skin
  • Paleness or pallor
  • Bluish lips and fingertips (cyanosis)
  • Irregular, slow, or absent pulse
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Unresponsiveness/stupor
  • Respiratory depression and distress
  • Choking/gurgling (death rattle)

The Consequences of Addiction

As with any addiction, an individual’s values, priorities, inhibitions, and impairments may be negatively altered as he or she grows increasingly obsessed with obtaining and using the drug.

Common issues experienced by those who are addicted to drugs or alcohol include the following:

  • Arrests and incarceration
  • Neglect of children, household duties, and other important obligations
  • Aggressive behavior and domestic violence
  • Damaged relationships and withdrawal from family and friends
  • Loss of interest in activities once considered important or enjoyable
  • Intense cravings to use the drug of choice
  • Engagement in dangerous activities and drug-seeking behavior
  • Use of drugs when the situation is not appropriate or is hazardous (e.g., driving)
  • Development of virulent relationships with others who engage in substance abuse

A person’s life can become very volatile and inundated by adverse effects. As his or her drug of choice becomes a priority in life, the individual will begin to neglect family, school, or work responsibilities in favor of drug use.

People suffering from addiction often lose their job and find it difficult to maintain steady employment, experience financial issues, and fail to attend to the upkeep of their appearance and personal hygiene.

Seeking Treatment

Admitting that you have an addiction is the first step to finding the help you need to overcome it.
