Effects of MDMA

MDMA is an amphetamine-based stimulant often used by young people. Most commonly, it is a “party drug“, taken at clubs, concerts, raves, and parties.

Like all stimulants, it invokes a sense of euphoria and excessive energy. However, effects of MDMA can also be psychedelic, producing time and perception distortions as well as tactile sensations.

MDMA is also commonly known as Ecstasy, XTC, or Molly. It is usually consumed as a tablet or capsule, 1-2 doses at 60-120 mg per pill.

Effects are said to last 3-6 hours, but some report a longer duration of effects. It is also not uncommon for users to take back-to-back doses as one dosage begins to wear off.

Note: True Ecstasy tablets may actually contain products in addition to MDMA, including caffeine, DXM, and cocaine.

Effects of MDMA on the Body and Brain

MDMA works on the brain by increasing serotonin and dopamine. These are the “feel good” chemicals that contribute to the sense of euphoria.

It also increases norepinephrine, which cause the additional stimulant effects. This is basically how MDMA functions to create a high.

Further negative effects include harm to serotonin-infused nerve cells, sometimes causing long-lasting damage.

The stimulant effects of MDMA also raises body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. Rarely, this may lead to medical emergency.
